How I am Finding Patience and Self-Care on My Journey with Back Pain
The past few weeks have been a reality check for me. My back injury has forced me to slow down yet again and truly think about  what matters most. Living with a bulging disc and sciatica is tough—some days, the pain makes even simple to-do’s feel impossible, especially not being able to drive my kids to school or their activities. I’ve had to lean on family and their close friends to support me during this healing season I am in. Their love and support has reminded me how important it is to let others help when we need it most.
They say challenges teach us something, and I’m starting to see that. This time of stillness has helped me reflect, simplify my life, and appreciate the small joys. With Christmas coming, I’m looking forward to traditions that make me happy—doing puzzles, watching movies in cozy clothes, reading, and baking twist cookies. As I heal, I’m also finding ways to ease my back pain and strengthen my body at home.
If you’re struggling with back pain from a herniated/bulging disc or sciatica, I want to share three things that ave been helping me along the way:
1. Heat and Ice Therapy
Firstly, is rest. Using heat and ice has been a simple but effective way to manage pain. Ice helps reduce inflammation, especially when my sciatica flares up, while heat relaxes tight muscles and promotes blood flow. Alternating between the two has made a big difference in my pain.
2. Gentle Movement and Stretching
While resting is important, staying completely immobile can actually make things worse. I’ve found that gentle yoga stretches—like child’s pose, cat-cow, and pelvic tilts—help relieve some of the tension in my lower back and legs. Walking, even for short periods around my house then in my backyard helps, it helps with circulation and healing. The key is to listen to your body and avoid movements that make the pain worse.
3. Strengthening My Core
One thing I’ve learned is how much our core supports our back. I’ve started incorporating gentle core-strengthening exercises like bridges and modified planks into my routine (as recommended by my acupuncturist, and physical therapist ). Strengthening my core has helped stabilize my spine and reduce strain on my lower back over time.
Healing is a slow process and unfortunately takes time, and I’m learning to be patient with myself in the process. Some days are harder than others, but I’m choosing to focus on progress rather than perfection. This journey has reminded me to slow down, lean on those who care about me, and embrace the beauty of life’s simple pleasures.
If you’re struggling with back pain, know that you’re not alone. Give yourself grace, take it one day at a time, and don’t hesitate to reach out for support. And as we enter this holiday season, I hope we can all find comfort in the moments that truly matter.
Wishing you peace and love,
From my heart to yours, Stacey @ The Collective Heart♥️
